In 1894, Almanzo and Laura (Ingalls) Wilder brought their family (daughter, Rose) to Mansfield, Missouri and called Mansfield home for the next sixty-four years.  During those sixty-four years, the Wilder family came to love the Mansfield area and to genuinely appreciate the Ozarks. Music was one of the Wilder's favorite aspects of the Ozarks.  Some of the ways Almanzo and Laura enjoyed the music of the Ozarks were old-fashioned music parties, singings, music in the park, and sitting on the front porches of friends' homes.

Kickin' Up Grass is a celebration of the Wilder's love and appreciation of Bluegrass and Old Time Mountain Music.
Kickin' Up Grass -- an Ozarks Mountain Musical Showdown will be held on September 13, 2008 during the Wilder Days' Festival.
The purpose of this Showdown is the promotion of Bluegrass or Old Time Mountain Music as a style of music that the Wilder family appreciated. The Kickin' Up Grass competition will give bands an opportunity to perform their Bluegrass or Old Time Mountain music in a public setting for a cash prize.
